Description:
Gandhi sitting, reading by a spinning wheel. Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948) was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule, and is widely considered the father of his country. During his political career, he won wide approval for his doctrine of non-violent protest to achieve political and social progress. Margaret Bourke-White photographed Mahatma Gandhi many times, taking her last picture of him hours before he was assassinated. This photograph was published in the book, “The Photographs of Margaret Bourke-White” by Sean Callahan, c. 1972. |
