Loengard writes on this photograph in his book "As I See It," "Gyula Halász, painter, sculptor, journalist and photographer, moved to Paris from Brassó, Transylvania, in 1923. He made Brassai his professional name, and gained a reputation in the early 1930s by photographing Paris at night. Outside his apartment, we waited for the elevator. Fayard (LIFE magazine's European correspondent and ranslator) and started down the stairs to see what was causing the delay. On her way, she said something in French that caught his attention. It must have been very funny. His reaction caught mine."
