Description:
The ocean liner America was built at Newport News, Virginia and launched on August 31, 1939. America entered service as the flagship of the United States Lines in August 1940. During WWII, the ship was converted to a troop transport vessel. With the introduction of the larger and faster SS United States in 1952, America’s reign as queen of the US merchant marine was over. One little known fact is that America was one of the few ocean liners, American or otherwise, that had her interiors designed by women.
